Supplies
you will need:
- 10 oz. Soy Container Blend Wax
- Liquid Dye or Dye Chips
- 6 tsp. Soy Compatible Fragrance
- 10 oz. Apothecary Jar
- Wick (FW 3x36)
- Thermometer
- Wick Stickums (optional)
- Warning Labels (optional)
- Wick Bar (optional)
Tip: 1 lb. of melted soy wax = 2-1/4 cups. 1 lb. of wax will make (2) 8 oz.
candles, (1) 16 oz. candle, or (8) 2 oz. votives.
Tip: Our Apothecary jar is 4" wide at it's widest point so we used our FW 3x36 wick. This wick is specially
formulated for soy.
Tip: When adding dye always remember that you can always go darker, but you
can't go lighter.
Step
1: Be sure your jar is free of dust and debris. Using a wick
stickum fasten your wick to the bottom of your clean, dry container.
Wick stickums are double-sided so peel off the coating of one layer
and stick it to the bottom of the wick tab. Peel off the other side
of the stickum and adhere it to the bottom of the jar.
Step
2: Heat your soy container wax to 160
-165* - use a thermometer. Do not heat
above 165* and DO NOT EVER let this wax reach 350* as it will flash
fire at that temp.
For this
project we melted 10 oz. of wax in the microwave on low and stirred
every 2 minutes while watching the temperature carefully - stop at 160*.
Remove from the microwave/heat source. Add desired amount of dye (we used 10 drops of premium liquid dye).

Tip: The safest way to melt your soy wax is to use a pyrex glass measuring
cup and a pot of boiling water (a type of double boiler method). Place
the desired amount of wax in your pyrex cup and then place your pyrex
cup into a shallow pan of boiling water. The boiling water will heat
the pyrex cup and melt your wax. Since the handle will become very hot,
be sure to handle the cup with a glove or other heat-resistant material.
Step
3: When the temperature drops to 125* add approx. 6 tsp. of fragrance. Stir for a full minute - the dye and fragrance must be thoroughly mixed
into the wax.
Step 4: Once your wax reaches 100*, very slowly pour your wax
into your jar. Fill just below the top. After you've poured your candle,
cover it with a box. Letting your soy candle cool slowly is key to a
nicely finished top. Be
sure it is cooling in a space that's not too cold (like the garage or
basement). Make sure the wick is centered and taught. We used a wick
bar to keep the wick taught and centered.

Step
5: Once your wax has completely cooled, trim your wick to 1/4"
long. Place a warning label on the bottom of your jar, and you're ready
to present your candle! We suggest you wait 4 days for your candle to
cure before burning your candle. This allows the necessary time for
the molecules to settle and will give you a better scent throw than
if you try burning right away.
Tip: Fragrance should be added in
the following quantities: To each 1/4 cup melted wax add 1 tsp. fragrance.
This is an approximate amount and can be adjusted by 1/8 tsp to suit
your desired scent strength. If you'd rather work with weight, add 1.5
oz. fragrance to each pound of wax. That would be
1.5 oz. fragrance to each 2-1/4 cups melted soy wax.
